Questions to Ask
When every hotel you stay in has a card in the bathroom asking you to leave used towels in the bath, how do you see through the marketing spin and work out who really is taking steps towards making a difference to our environment?
Here are a few questions you could ask before you make a booking:
Energy Does the hotel use any renewable sources of energy, such as wind turbines, solar panels or geothermal energy? How does the hote conserve energy?
Water Does the hotel have dual-flush toilets? What does it do with waste water? (grey water can be recycled and used to water plants)
Pollution Does the hotel use environmentally friendly cleaning products? How does it minimise the quantity of chemicals it uses?
Waste What happens to the hotel's waste? Are food scraps composted or donated to charity? Are other items recycled or reused?
Community What does the hotel do for its community? Are local people employed at the hotel? Is its natural environment protected and nurtured?
