Top Tips for Creating a ‘Green’ Event
1. Select a venue which demonstrates sound green credentials and is taking steps to recycle more and reduce their waste, energy and water consumption. Click here for a selection of venues we work with who have taken action to improve their impact on the environment.
2. Select a caterer or venue which uses fair-trade, organic and locally sourced products.
3. Ask the venue to provide food options which aren’t individually packaged (e.g. biscuits, cakes and cereal bars) to reduce waste and instead ask for items that can be bought or made in bulk such as fruit, cakes, home-made biscuits or muffins, cheeses and crackers.
4. Avoid direct mail campaigns for marketing your event and send electronic invitations.
5. Offer an online registration or booking facility instead of paper booking forms. If paper is necessary, use recyclable paper. Right Location can provide a cost effective online registration system for your event. Click here for further details.
6. Offer an incentive to delegates who travel to the event in an environmentally friendly way: e.g Car sharing, using public transport etc. Alternatively, organise shuttle transport to and from major arrival points (train stations, airports etc)
7. Ask speakers to use a projector for presentations instead of using flip-charts or hand-outs. Give out memory sticks or discs containing course/event presentations and handouts rather than printing copies. If this isn’t possible, ask speakers or exhibitors to print their materials on recycled, recyclable paper or put them on your website for delegates to view or download.
8. Make sure recycling bins are clearly labelled at the venue and encourage your delegates to put their waste in the correct place.
9. Source reusable plastic holders for name badges and remind people to return them so they can be reused after the event.
10. Provide bikes for residential delegates to explore the surroundings of the venue without using a car throughout the event. -You could get them sponsored!
11. Avoid off site extras such as dinners or team building, as they involve additional transport.
