What is the Industry Doing?

Many venues across the UK are now doing their bit as they know that environmental issues are important to us and our clients. From hybrid company cars to reducing laundry costs, there are many ways everyone can contribute. We’re constantly updating our database with details of eco-friendly venues who are taking steps to recycle more and reduce their waste, energy and water consumption.

There are many initiatives designed to assist venues and suppliers to improve their environmental performance, make substantial cost savings and prove their green credentials to potential customers. Research has shown that 31% of travellers now take sustainability and environmental issue into consideration when planning their destination, so assessing the green credentials of a venue is becoming ever more important.

Considerate Hoteliers (www.consideratehoteliers.com) was established in 1991 and work to promote the message that care for the environment and social responsibility should form a major part of every responsible hotelier’s agenda. The organisation aims to encourage, assist, and motivate hoteliers to adopt sound and sustainable environmentally friendly and socially responsible policies and practices through events, advice and information provided for members. Take a look at their website for a list of members.

Many venues are showing their commitment to sustainability issues through their catering options, by sourcing Fairtrade products (www.fairtrade.org.uk) which are supplied by producers who respect agreed environmental and social standards. The Fairtrade label reassures consumers that small-scale producers are paid fairly and work in acceptable conditions. If ethically sourced and traded produce is important to you, ask your chosen venue whether they actively source locally produced catering options to minimise the harmful effects to the environment of sourcing long-distance food for their venue.

Hampshire Fare (www.hampshirefare.co.uk) runs a series of marketing events and promotions around the county to promote awareness of local food and drink, and to encourage more people to use Hampshire produce. The website also features details of savings and special offers on local food, drink and craft purchases. Many other regions throughout the country also run similar schemes promoting their local region.

The Green Tourism Business Scheme (www.green-business.co.uk) is the leading sustainable tourism certification scheme in the UK. Businesses are audited against a set of criteria covering energy and water efficiency, waste and recycling policies, paper usage and biodiversity. They then receive a grading of bronze, silver or gold standard based on their level of achievement in the audit, and an action plan is put in place to improve standards of resources and energy management. Many popular conference destinations all over the country have become involved with this scheme, including London. The London Development Agency set up Green Tourism for London in October 2007 (www.lda.avensc.com/page.asp?id=21) to improve the environmental performance of London venues, and offers subsidies to businesses to help make London a more sustainable city.

A similar scheme, Sustainable Hotel www.sustainablehotel.co.uk advises the hotel industry on improved business performance through advice on sustainability. Their consultants conduct site audits at participating venues by assessing current performance and then assist the business to reduce energy, water and waste by benchmarking improvements. Ask your chosen venue whether they’ve had their assessment yet!

Visit Scotland have launched a ‘Sustainable Tourism’ initiative (www.greentourism.org.uk) and have put strategies in place to make sure that Scottish tourism improves the quality of life of local communities while maintaining biodiversity, reducing pollution and harmful effects on the environment. The website gives advice to visitors on how to go green and is worth having a look at if you’re thinking of holding an event in Scotland.

Carepar (Carbon Emission per Room Available: www.carepar.com) was launched by The Hotel Carbon Index Company under the directorship of Peter Ducker, executive director of the Hotel Booking Agents Association (HBAA) to benchmark carbon emissions from hotels and meetings and events venues. Through data made available via The Carbon Consultancy, Carepar allows agencies to understand the emissions produced by a participating venue, meaning clients have a more informed choice of where to book. Right Location are currently looking at becoming involved with this scheme to help us develop our database of ‘green’ venues.
